Guanajuato

The state of Guanajuato in central Mexico is often seen as the catalyst for Mexico's independence movement. The first conflict with Spain in the 19th century took place at the Alhóndiga de Granaditas granary in the city's namesake. The hills, cobblestone streets, and colonial buildings of the ancient mining town are major tourist attractions, as are the town's many charming garden plazas, such as the Jardin de La Unión.
