The construction of the new Sea of Cortez Aquarium in Mazatlan is on schedule, and will open its doors in the second half of September, informed Rafael Lizarraga Favela, executive director of the new marine showground.
He said that the construction of the building will be 78 percent complete this March. Until yesterday, he indicated that the work was mainly focused on details of the work and installation of the equipment required for the building's operation.
Among the work of the personnel, he said, is the placement of the acrylics installed in various parts of the construction site. He also commented that they are already working in the area where the heart of the aquarium will be placed, which corresponds to the life support equipment, which is essential to maintain the species that will be housed in the building.
The director of the new Mar de Cortés aquarium did not rule out the possibility of adding to the project attractions of the old marine enclosure that were not contemplated to be transferred. The penguinarium, the sea lion area, and the fish tank area, he assured, could be part of the attractions that will be offered to visitors after the opening in September.
"Those areas are not within the concession, then, a management plan has to be made for the destination that will be given to them." He acknowledged that the developer of the new aquarium is proposing to the municipal authorities to integrate the shows that were not contemplated. The proposal, he assured, will make a single tourism product stronger than what the project already is.
Precisely, he pointed out that yesterday morning a tour of the facilities of the new aquarium was made to members of the board of the marine show enclosure. He mentioned that the visit was to show the progress of the construction, which began in February 2019, whose total investment cost is 1.7 billion pesos, 65 percent from the developer and 35 percent from the Federal Government.
Personally, the members of the aquarium's board were informed about the current state of the great construction, which began three years ago. The staff of the new marine show venue guided the guests through every corner of the building, where security prevailed at all times.
Six months before the Sea of Cortez Aquarium opens its doors to locals and visitors, the building is already beginning to take shape, as there are only a few walls left to be built.
This is how the new Mazatlan Aquarium will look like
The Aquarium of the Sea of Cortes aspires to become a center of scientific research on marine life through alliances with international founders and educational institutions. A few days ago, he officially started the construction project of the new Aquarium of Mar de Cortés, in the tourist zone of Mazatlan, Sinaloa.
This aquarium will have in its facilities a room dedicated to Jacques Cousteau, a renowned French oceanographer who positioned the Gulf of California as The Aquarium of the World. The construction will be located on Bahia Street, within the geographic center of the urban area of the city, facing the sea, with communication and infrastructure that supports the start of the Mazatlan Central Park project.
The Aquarium of the Sea of Cortés is projected to be one of the 10 largest in the world, with a capacity of 10 thousand visitors in the high season (the current has a capacity of 5 thousand).
