At least 165 people have been injured in the last few days due to moray eel bites at Guayabitos and Los Ayala beaches, in the municipality of Compostela; therefore, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection decided to close these areas to bathers.

Before this closure, civil protection, and state firefighters, together with the municipality, carried out preventive surveillance activities and placed red and purple flags to warn residents and tourists about the presence of these fish that could pose a risk.

"Specialized biologists of the SSPC, suggest that this phenomenon originates from temperature changes in the sea or also by reproductive events among the species", exposed the secretariat through a communiqué in which it asked the population to attend the pertinent recommendations.

Among them, is to pay attention to the placement of the purple flag, which alerts about the existence of harmful fauna in the place; in addition to avoiding swimming or recreational activities in the water or beach area.

Finally, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection asked the population not to disseminate or participate in false information, and to heed official alerts.
