In the first five months of this year, there were 317 victims of intentional homicide in Quintana Roo, while in the same period of 2017 the authorities recorded 100 victims. This means that the number of murders tripled in that entity.

Although Quintana Roo was placed in the 17th place of the most violent states in the country, it turned out to be the entity where intentional homicide soared in the last two years, above Guanajuato, the state with the highest number of murders. between January and May of 2019, with a thousand 493 victims identified.

According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), between January-May 2017 and the same period of 2019, the number of investigation files opened for intentional homicide soared by 511% in the municipality of Solidaridad, whose head is Playa del Carmen, and doubled in Cancun, while in Tulum it went from three investigations to 10 in 2019.

However, during a visit to Cancun, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated this morning that the number of homicides was reduced by half in Quintana Roo during the last month, since, "he said," there were an average of two daily homicides and has achieved something very important: reduce the number of homicides to an average of one daily".

While it is true that the SESNSP recorded 34 victims of intentional homicide during May - the lowest number since February 2018 - it is also true that the first five months of this year have been the most violent in the recent history of Quintana Roo, It exceeded by 26% the figure registered in that period of 2018 and exceeded on average the two murders per day.
