In September, General Motors produced 20,619 cars in Mexico, which represented almost three-quarters less than what it produced during the same month of the previous year, according to data from the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).

The shortage of chips has forced various plant closures in Mexico, which has led to a sharp drop in the production of cars in the country, said Fausto Cuevas, CEO of the AMIA, at a press conference. He predicted that the automotive industry will recover its pre-pandemic level until 2024.

According to the Administrative Registry of the light vehicle automotive industry, General Motors stopped producing five models during September of this year and reduced the volume of another four, making it the company most affected by the shortage of these components in Mexico.

The report, which is based on Inegi, states that the company did not build a single-vehicle of the Equinox, Terrain, Trax, Blazer, and Onix models, while it reduced the production of its two variants of the Sierra and Silverado pickup trucks.

The sixth most valuable automaker in the world has four plants in Mexico. One in Toluca, where it manufactures engines, as well as one in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila; Silao, in Guanajuato, and in San Luis Potosí.

Another model that had a significant reduction in its production in Mexico between September of last year and the same month of 2021 was Volkswagen's Jetta. The German company reported the production of 5,300 cars of this model in the ninth month of this year, compared to 13,368 in September 2020.
