The Government of Jalisco announced that Guadalajara will co-host, along with Hong Kong, the Gay Games 2023, which is expected to bring together around 24 thousand people from more than 50 countries from November 3 to 11, 2023, with an economic revenue of 600 million pesos (mdp), part of which will benefit Chapala.

According to Jalisco's Secretary of Tourism, Vanessa Perez Lamas, the recreational and tourist activities that accompany this sporting event will benefit not only Puerto Vallarta, but also different tourist spots, including the riverside municipality:

"I believe that one of the issues we have to offer in this event, in the pre and post-Gay Games, is our tourist offer. A great part of the activities will take place in Puerto Vallarta, but we are also creating the conditions for them to diversify in the rest of the destinations we have to offer, such as the magical towns".

The secretary informed that the participating tourist venues are: Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Costalegre, Tlaquepaque, Tequila, Chapala, Mazamitla, Tapalpa, Talpa de Allende, Mascota, San Sebastián del Oeste, Lagos de Moreno, Ruta Wixárica and Ruta Altos.

According to the Datatur platform, of the Government of Mexico, there are 56 hotels in Chapala, as of December 31, 2020; and it has a magical town, Ajijic; it is a town that is full of color thanks to its murals and cobblestone streets, restaurants, galleries, textile stores, fondas, cafes and bars; according to the State Government, it has 136 food and beverage establishments, 2 operators of specialized services and a travel agency.

For his part, the Governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro Ramírez, said that eliminating hate and discrimination is a task to which all sectors of society must join:

"Ending hatred and discrimination is a task that we must all assume as a priority, because this city, its history, its culture, and its ability to think about the future, must be accompanied by a permanent presence of respect, inclusion, tolerance, above all love to honor our past and think about a future like the one we all aspire for Guadalajara and Jalisco."

This will be the first time in more than 40 years that this international sporting and cultural event will take place in Mexico and Latin America. During the 15-day event, which is being organized in collaboration with the Gay Games Guadalajara 2023 Committee, the Governor explained, that the presence of around 8,000 athletes and 16 accompanying persons is expected, which reflects the magnitude of the products, services, and attractions they need, which can be covered by hoteliers, restaurateurs, and local merchants.
