During the night of Sunday, October 24, a man identified as Jhon "N" from Great Britain allegedly took his own life by throwing himself off the Colosio Boulevard bridge at the entrance of Cancun near the International Airport. The events occurred around 10:00 p.m., when the 911 emergency number was activated, in which it was reported that a man was threatening to throw himself off the bridge, near the air terminal.

Public Safety and Red Cross personnel arrived at the scene to dissuade the subject from throwing himself off the bridge, however, the man did not respond to the help and finally threw himself off the bridge, which is about 8 meters high. However, upon impacting his body against the ground, a vehicle ran over him. The paramedics of ambulance Qr22 immediately came to his aid, but the man no longer had vital signs.

Municipal Police personnel cordoned off the area so that experts from the Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo could do their work and transfer his body to the Forensic Medical Service.

Cancun faces a serious situation of suicide and suicidal ideation

Quintana Roo occupies the fifth place in the national scale of suicides since it is estimated that there are nine of them per one hundred thousand inhabitants, that is, it is one of the highest incidences, since the national average is 6.2, but that is not all, even though Cancun, located in the municipality of Benito Juarez, is the most important tourist destination in the country, it is also the most problematic in this regard in the state, says Rosny Lopez Hernandez, director of the organization Salvando una Vida (Saving a Life).

This organization was born three years ago in the state of Tabasco, after the suicide of the director's best friend, and now seeks to expand to cities with a high rate, such as Cancun, where this condition is not only of its residents but also of tourists, as has happened recently on the bridge near the Cancun International Airport, she said.

They will seek an approach with municipal authorities to contribute with mechanisms and strategies to contain the situation and create a line of immediate attention, for which the support of local psychologists is required since the attention they currently provide is given from Tabasco, and what he assured is that the pandemic has generated an increase in this problem, which is maintained since the figures for 2020 and 2021 in the same period are almost the same with 142 and 143 cases registered.

Another major obstacle is the ignorance and taboos that still exist about going to a psychologist, including not knowing how to detect when it is necessary. Today, anxiety plays a very important role and no actions are being developed to reduce this problem, so he called on professionals, institutions, and authorities to join in.
