Cancun and the Riviera Maya received in recent months a multitude of military brigades that came to the rescue of the two major threats facing tourism in the famous Mexican Caribbean destinations. One is insecurity due to the battle between drug gangs and another is the invasion of sargassum seaweed on the beaches.

There will be more troops from the National Guard in tourist areas such as Benito Juárez (Cancun) and Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen), municipalities where the forces will be doubled, from 450 to 900, in each municipality under the Tourism Police model and this will come into force as of July.

With the aim of neutralizing the narcos and eradicating all types of violence in the Mexican Caribbean, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador decided to shield the state of Quintana Roo with the elite military corps (EMP) that has always been assigned to the custody of the president and his family and which he now dissolved.

The state of Quintana Roo was inaugurated in Isla Mujeres the newly built Military City in the urban area with the arrival of 400 members of the Military Police aboard two Boeing of the Mexican Air Force and with another 800 troops who arrived by land in nine trucks.

The most urgent issues

The most urgent issues, apart from crime, are sargassum, promotion, and publicity. The government has injected a large sum of money into security by building the base of the Military Police in the State. It is always a good time to invest in security, which is the main ingredient of tourism success. The opening of the Military City will be of great benefit to the State.

The arrival of the new military regiment in Quintana Roo, especially in Cancún, is a good sign for the destination and the productive sector, since considerable progress is expected in terms of security, which in turn will contribute to actions aimed at improving the image and perception of tourists in this matter.
