Yucatan celebrates 500 years of the country's first bishopric

The archdiocese of Yucatan will hold a series of conferences commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Bula Carolense, which will be held on January 24. For this reason, on January 22 and 23, there will be a series of activities that include 6 conferences that will be presented in the Chapter Hall of the Cathedral.

The first day program includes the keynote address by the researcher Joel Peña Espinosa of INAH-Puebla, with the theme: Fray Julián Garcés, project and destination of the bishopric.

Also, "The Ecclesiastical Chapter of Yucatan, origin and organization", by the master researcher Ángel Gutiérrez Romero, from the Autonomous University of Yucatán.

On the second date, day 23, the program establishes: Magisterial Conference "Fundamental Evangelization in Mexico", by Professor Juan Carlos Casas García, while "The Historical Archives of the Archdiocese of Yucatán" will be given by Lic. Héctor Cárdenas Angulo, and finally, "The consolidation of the secular clergy in the Bishopric of Yucatan", by Dr. Víctor Medina Suarez.

According to the scholar, in 1519 the exploration, discovery, pacification and colonization of the peninsular territory began and the document has no effect until almost two decades later, in 1542, with the founding of the city of Mérida, capital of the captaincy and province. of Yucatan, to have a definitive establishment of the Spanish institutions and others.

According to the historian, it was King Charles V, who asked the papacy to create a bishopric that he would designate as: "De Santa Maria de los Remedios, Yucatan or Carolense".

With the founding of the new diocese, the first bishop was appointed as Fray Julián García, a religious of the Order of Preachers, who took this position; however, he never exercised it, because he did not reach these lands, since the first attempts to settle in the mainland were unsuccessful.

Gutierrez Romero stressed that these days of history of the Church of Yucatan, will serve to continue the dialogue and reflections on the development of the process of construction of the Diocese, which are one of the tasks that allow to establish more information on religious aspects and secular of Merida.
