Manzanillo, Acapulco, and Cancún have the highest rates of high-impact crimes in beach tourism destinations in Mexico. According to a report by the National Citizen Observatory, which measured the incidence of crime from March 2018 to February 2019, the biggest problems of these sites are extortion, intentional homicide, femicide, narco-trafficking, and kidnapping to a lesser extent.

The top five dangerous beaches are completed by the beaches of Rosarito and Zihuatanejo. The report notes that Manzanillo had higher rates than national in four of the five crimes analyzed with 372 percent higher in intentional homicides and 39 percent higher than in his entity. It showed growth in its extortion and common kidnapping rates during the period of March 2018 - February 2019 compared to the same period a year ago.

"This placed Manzanillo as the tourist municipality with the highest rate of intentional homicides plus femicides, the third with the highest rate of common abduction and the second with the highest rate of drug dealing," the report highlights.

Acapulco also had rates higher than the national rate in four of five crimes: intentional homicide plus femicide and common abduction, with levels higher in 289 and 145 percent respectively. It even showed growth in the extortion rates.

"This ranked Acapulco as the second tourist municipality with the highest rate of common abduction, the third with the highest rate of robbery with violence and the fourth with the highest rate of intentional homicides plus femicides."

While in the municipality of Benito Juarez, where the beaches of Cancun are located, registered its highest levels in intentional homicide plus femicide and robbery with violence, with rates 170 and 105 percent higher than those registered at the national level. It showed increases in its rates of extortion, intentional homicide plus femicide, and robbery with violence from March 2018 to February 2019. In this way, Benito Juarez was ranked as the touristic municipality with the highest rate of robbery with violence and the fifth with the highest homicide rate fraudulent plus femicides.

Finally, in the Playas de Rosarito, intentional homicides and femicides, as well as robberies with violence, increased. And Zihuatanejo was the first place in the kidnapping destinations.
