Super Bowl, an American tradition in Mexico
Mexico is the country with the most NFL fans outside of the United States. It is increasingly common for Mexicans, amateurs or not, to get together to watch the game.
According to information from Statista, in Mexico, there are more than 23 million fans of the NFL, which makes our country the place with the largest number of fans outside the US territory.
American football has been present in Mexican society for several decades but in recent times it has taken root with greater force. An example of the above are the two university leagues and a professional one, in addition to the hundreds of amateur tochito leagues that are played in various sports of the republic.
The closeness to the US allows this type of cultural exchanges that are enriching for both countries despite the mentality and statements of President Donald Trump, shared with a sector of the US population.
But racial conflict does not just happen between Americans and Mexicans: people of African-American descent living in the US have protested police brutality against their community in hundreds of cases.
Such protest was present in the NFL in 2016 through the voice of who was the quarterback of the 49's of San Francisco, Colin Kaepernick. This annoyance is still valid to the extent that on the platform to create mass requests, Change.org, the artists in charge of the part-time show -Maroon 5, mainly- were summoned to kneel and join the complaint.
The rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi are also part of the most mediatic show on American television. Meanwhile, Maroon 5 and Travis Scott have donated, in conjunction with the NFL, $ 500,000 for the Big Brother Big Sister and Dream Corps foundations.
In the middle of all this debate, next Sunday, February 3 at 5:30 pm (Mexico time) will be played Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, Georgia, between Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots game that will be seen by more than 100 million people around the world.
New England will play its fourth Super Bowl in the last 5 years, of which it has won two. In case of coming out victorious, this edition would tie the Pittsburgh Steelers as top winners with 6 Vince Lombardi trophies each.
Mexicans, in addition to passionate about the North American national sport, also find a good excuse to get together and enjoy living with family and friends while they eat snacks and drink beer, just as they do from New York to California.
