Growth is potential, given that in 2017 there were a total of 2 million 148 thousand 484 travelers compared to 2 million 451 thousand 66 last year.

This is due to the efforts of the authorities in the field of tourism and the presence of Yucatan in various forums. At this moment, more than 13 international and national airlines showed their interest in opening new routes from various destinations to Yucatan, as a result of the negotiations held within the framework of the Routes America fair, considered the most important commercial aviation in the world.

Starting in March, Yucatán will increase its flights to Hermosillo, Chihuahua, Oaxaca, and Tijuana, through the airline Volaris, which will be added to the three flights to León, Villahermosa and Toronto that entered into operation in the first month of the year.

The Secretariat of Tourism Development (Sefotur), Michelle Fridman Hirsch, took stock of the movement registered last year at the International Airport of Mérida, which closed with the arrival of 2 million 451 thousand 66 passengers, both entry and exit, which It meant a growth of 14.11 percent compared to 2017.

Also in that year, he said, the air terminal of the Yucatecan capital received 195 weekly domestic flights, with 16 international flights, with an offer of 30,346 airplane seats.

Among the companies interested in consolidating and generating new flights to the Yucatan Peninsula, he highlighted Southwest Airlines, InterJet, UA, Aeromar, Avianca, Viva Aerobus, Sunwing Airlines, Westjet, Copa Airlines, American, TAR, JetBlue Airways, and Plus Ultra.

The strategy is focused on increasing the international air connectivity of Yucatán to consolidate it as a reference destination in the Mexican southeast.

During his stay he participated in various news forums of the aviation industry and met with the tourist offices of the province of Quebéc and its different ports, to strengthen the ties between the territory and such an important city in Canada.

On the other hand, Michell Fridman highlighted the results of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, where 200 appointments were made, 13 thousand tastings were offered and the "Excelencias Turísticas" prize was awarded for the Yucatan Turístico 360 project, as well as of having signed the letter of intent with the Royal Academy of Gastronomy (RAG).

He also highlighted the Yucatecan presence in Millesime, which had nine thousand gastronomic samples, and in the Feria de León, with the distribution of three thousand 500 tacos of cochinita prepared by the restaurant Kinich, before the concert of Armando Manzanero.

In the city of Guanajuato, Yucatecan artisans exhibited their products to almost five million attendees during the 25 days of the event, achieving excellent sales and the same happened at the Acapulco Fair.

The secretary reiterated that tourism is the engine for economic takeoff and that, through the State Development Plan, under the guidelines of the Governor, Mauricio Vila Dosal, four sectoral axes and five cross-cutting actions were integrated, since one of those policies within the economic sector is the public policy of boosting tourism.

"We include the proposals of the different chambers and associations. It is a job that is worth reflecting to know where we are going as a tourist destination, "he said.

He added that, in the work tables, objectives, strategies, and lines of action were proposed to integrate the State Development Plan (PED) 2018-2024, where the unit "reaffirms its commitment to continue working together for the welfare of all the Yucatecas ".

Representatives of the municipalities of Mérida, Progreso, Valladolid, and Izamal, as well as the Tourism Business Council of Yucatán (Cetur) and the Mexican Association of Hotels of Yucatán (AMHY) also participate in this company.

For his part, Rafael Hernández Kotasek, Technical Secretary of Planning and Evaluation, as well as General Coordinator of the Council for Planning and Evaluation of the State of Yucatan (Copledey), explained the main pillars underlying the PED promoted by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, which the Commission derives as part of the Yucatan axis with an inclusive economy.

Representatives of the Association of Promotional Travel Agencies of Tourism of Yucatan, of the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry and Seasoned Foods (Canirac), federal agencies, social and academic groups, as well as Héctor Navarrete, director of Airports, also participate in this commission. The matrix that makes up the PED includes, within each of its policies, working groups with experts that elaborate objectives, strategies, and lines of action. The results were 139 workgroups, two thousand 144 attendees, 78 objectives, 780 strategies and two thousand 376 lines of action.
