Traditional roasted meats caused the Nuevo Leon government to activate the environmental contingency.

In addition to pyrotechnic fires and the conditions of atmospheric stability, the coal used for the traditional roasted meats caused the Nuevo Leon government to activate the environmental contingency.

The Secretariat of Sustainable Development of Nuevo León informed that the contingency was activated due to the high concentrations of pollutants in the metropolitan area, as a consequence of the New Year celebrations.

According to the observed trends, the pollution comes mainly from the burning of coal, used for traditional roasts, and pyrotechnics, activities that are very characteristic of the festivities of this season.

In a statement, the entity said that the aforementioned emissions, coupled with atmospheric stability conditions, such as low wind speed and thermal inversion, lead to increased concentrations of pollutants, generating extremely poor air quality conditions.

"We urge the general public to avoid burning any kind of material - coal, firewood, garbage, pyrotechnics - in the entire Metropolitan Area, as well as to limit outdoor activities, mainly to sensitive groups such as young children, adults and people with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, " it said.

The statement also warned that "if there is the discomfort of the respiratory tract, it is recommended to go to the medical service immediately; also, to limit as much as possible the use of vehicles and the consumption of cigarettes ".
