The Ministry of Agriculture and Social Development presented the agro-food report at the end of 2018 and the expectations for the sector this year.

In 2018, 21.6 million hectares of agrifood products were sown, at the end of last year's production was 286.1 million tons, with the western central region generating the greatest volume.

When presenting its report on the agri-food sector at the end of 2018 and the expectations for 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture and Social Development pointed out that Mexico is the third-largest agricultural producer in Latin America and the eleventh in the world.

Regarding the expectation for the closure of 2019, it detailed that the production reached 293 million tons which will represent a growth of 2.6 percent for 2018.

In addition, for the fifth consecutive year, in the January and February 2019 period, the agricultural and agro-industrial trade swoop obtained a surplus of 441 million dollars, so the primary sector contributes 3% of the national total of employment and contributes to the 3.3 percent of total GDP.

Secretary Villalobos said that the primary objectives of the unit are to support small producers in the Mexican countryside and to recover self-sufficiency in food production, with the participation of private initiative.
