Lung cancer claims 21 lives a day in Mexico
In Mexico, seven thousand new cases of lung cancer are detected each year and it is estimated that 21 people die daily from this disease, experts reported at the Congress of the Mexican Society of Oncology.
The specialists gathered in Merida, Yucatan, agreed on the importance of diagnosing this disease in a timely manner, since currently, 95 percent of cases are identified in advanced stages.
During the meeting "A todo pulmón", which took place during the congress, they commented on the benefits offered by immunotherapy also called biological therapy to treat people with this condition.
In this regard, the head of the Thoracic Oncology Clinic of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases, Jerónimo Rodríguez Cid, said that "immunotherapy has been presented as a promising option in the treatment against cancer, since it is a type of therapy that stimulates the body's natural defenses.
The oncologist said the most significant advantages of this treatment are that it stops the growth of cancer cells, prevents them from spreading to other organs, and helps the immune system to function better when it comes to destroying malignant cells.
In addition, he added, such treatments may be more effective than others and less toxic to healthy, noncancerous cells.
Isabelle Aloi-Timeus, representative of the United Front for Lung Cancer, said it is necessary to reduce the transition from the general practitioner to the specialist due to the first symptom in patients, as well as considering that the integration of innovative therapies to public health institutions could help improve the survival of patients.
