Moments of panic were lived at a funeral in the Mexican state of Veracruz, after gunmen arrived at the scene and shot dead two people, allegedly relatives of the deceased and also shot at the coffin with the remains of a young man shot hours before, authorities reported Thursday. Local police said the assailants fired at the body that was being veiled at the funeral home in the municipality of Pánuco, about 500 kilometers from the capital Mexico City.
According to a source from the Mexican Army, who is not authorized to give statements to the press, "two people were killed during the attack, it is the mourners of the young man who was veiled." The police information maintains that there is no information on the identity of the victims because "all those present at the funeral fled" in the face of the deadly attack of the hitmen.
Pánuco is a municipality located in the Gulf of Mexico, along whose coast Veracruz extends, an important step of the drug trafficking routes between Mexico and the United States. Therefore, this state is affected by the violence derived from drug trafficking.
