Governor of Chihuahua asks not to minimize crime data
Javier Corral asked the Government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to avoid manipulating or minimizing the statistics of homicides because, he said, it would be a suicide for Mexico to lie in the problem of violence.
Corral stressed that the problem of criminality in the country will not be solved from one day to the next because it has deep roots.
"We could not ask the new federal government to solve the problem in a month, maybe it can not be done in a year or two because it is a very accumulated problem, it is many years of complicity, corruption, social inertia."
"What we can ask of you, and I think that is very important, that should be a great pact around the fight against insecurity, is that they will not start to manipulate the figures, because when you are in opposition Sometimes he sees things in a way and when one is in the government, he wants to see them from another, "said the PAN governor at a conference in the city of Chihuahua.
"We have to be careful with this management because it would be suicidal for the country to lie in the most serious problem that Mexico has, which is insecurity and violence."
Corral was questioned about the increase in homicides in December, the first month of Lopez Obrador's administration, which, according to REFORMA, closed with at least 887 executions, against the 537 cases counted in the last month of Enrique's administration. Peña Nieto, an increase of 65 percent.
The REFORMA Group Executor registers cases of murdered persons allegedly linked to organized crime and is based on official reports from federal and state ministerial authorities, federal and state public security corporations throughout the country, as well as news reports.
The method of registering cases is consistent year after year and has been carried out during the administrations of Vicente Fox (2000-2006), Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) and Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).
The Chihuahua Governor said that there is still no final, conclusive data, because the National Public Security System ends up processing the information in the first or second week of the following month.
"What I do point out is that it is very important to know what is the methodology that the new Government will assume to measure the incidence of crime in the country, particularly in the case of executions that are linked to all types of crimes, but particularly of the federal order" .
"It is very important that methodology, that metric, because the only thing that can not be done, not even to think about it, is to try to make up, hide or minimize violent acts," Corral emphasized.
He recalled that his first decision when he took the Government of Chihuahua was to assume statistics with absolute responsibility, commitment and truth.
"Because they hid for a long time, they put on makeup, they even eliminated research folders," he explained.
"We found hundreds of research folders in warehouses, not accounted for, so they handled the figure as wanted."
Therefore, he said, you have to recognize the problem in its entirety.
"The only thing that does not work is to hide it or to minimize it because the problems do not rot with time and they end up, they grow and they grow and they grow".
