Bank of Mexico launches new commemorative coins; three are silver coins

The coins commemorate the 700th anniversary of the lunar founding of Mexico Tenochtitlan, the 500th anniversary of Mexico-Tenochtitlan's historical memory, and the Bicentennial of National Independence.

The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) put into circulation six new 10 and 20 peso commemorative coins for the 700th anniversary of the lunar founding of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the 500th anniversary of the historical memory of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, and the Bicentennial of National Independence, which was minted by the Mexican Mint.

"It is an honor to be able to join the program of celebrations with which the federal government promotes the celebration of three great commemorations of great significance for the history of our country," said the Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, when presenting the coins during the conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The 20 peso coins are dodecagonal in shape and have a latent image and a micro text as security elements. In addition, they are legal tender, so the user public will be able to use them to make any type of payment.

According to Banxico, the reverse of the coin allusive to the "700 years of the lunar foundation of Mexico City-Tenochtitlan" presents at the center the eagle coming from the "Teocalli of the Sacred War" and above it the micro text "Teocalli".

To the right is the glyph of the moon as a latent image. On the upper border is the legend 700 years of the lunar foundation of Mexico Tenochtitlan. The denomination "$20" in "2021: Year of Independence".

Silver 10 peso coins

The reverse of the coin of the "700 years of the lunar foundation of the city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan" boasts in the central part the eagle on the nopal, the axis of the plate I of the Codex Mendocino, and the legend "Codex Mendoza".

In the upper part, the legend is "700 years of the lunar foundation of the city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan". The denomination "$10" in the exergue, on the left the mint of the Mint of Mexico "M°" and on the right the year "2021".

500 years of Mexico-Tenochtitlan's historical memory

The reverse of the coin referring to the "500 years of the historical memory of Mexico-Tenochtitlan" shows forming a reflection of the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Templo Mayor, and the denomination "$20". The Templo Mayor as a latent image and the micro text "Cultural fusion".

The coin referring to the "500 years of the historical memory of Mexico Tenochtitlan" shows in front and offset slightly to the right the Templo Mayor. In the background is the Plaza de la Constitución with the National Flag, the National Palace, and the Metropolitan Cathedral and Tabernacle.

In the superior contour in two lines the legend "500 years of the historical memory of Mexico Tenochtitlan". In the exergue, the denomination "$10", to the left the year "1521" and the mint of Mexico "M°" and to the right the year "2021".

Bicentennial of National Independence

The reverse of the coin commemorating the "Bicentennial of National Independence" shows at the center the effigies of Miguel Hidalgo, Jose Maria Morelos, and Vicente Guerrero in profile to the left. In the upper part, the Angel of Independence is a latent image and to the left is the micro text is "Libertad".

On the upper border the legend "Bicentennial of the National Independence". In the exergue the denomination "$20" with the years "1821" on the left and "2021" on the right. On the left is the mint of Mexico "M°".

Silver 10 peso coins

The reverse of the "Bicentennial of National Independence" coin on the reverse side boasts, in its central part, the profile effigies of Miguel Hidalgo, Jose Maria Morelos, and Vicente Guerrero. To the left is the profile of the Winged Victory that tops the Angel of Independence. In the upper part following the outline, the legend "Bicentennial of the National Independence".

"Said events make 2021 the year of Mexico's greatness. Today, Banco de México announced the circulation of the six coins. In addition to being a means of payment, they are excellent vehicles to evoke our traditions and culture, as well as to commemorate transcendent events in our history," said Clouthier.
